The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced adjustments to the individual fees payable under the Madrid Protocol for certain contracting parties including Kenya, The African Intellectual Property Organization (Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle, OAPI) and Zambia.
These changes, made in accordance with the Regulations under the Madrid Protocol, directly affect brand owners designating these jurisdictions in their international trade mark registrations.
The revised fee structures took effect on 12 April 2026 and now apply to all relevant filings going forward.
Fee adjustments for Kenya
For brand owners seeking protection in Kenya via the Madrid System, the individual fees payable in Swiss francs (CHF) have been reduced as follows:
| Item | Fee until 11 April, 2026 (CHF) | New Fee as from 12 April, 2026 (CHF) |
| Application/Subsequent Designation (First Class) | 312 | 268 |
| Each Additional Class | 223 | 192 |
| Renewal (First Class) | 178 | 153 |
| Each Additional Renewal Class | 134 | 115 |
Fee adjustments for OAPI
Similarly, OAPI has implemented a downward revision of its individual fees:
| Item | Fee until 11 April, 2026 (CHF) | New Fee as from 12 April, 2026 (CHF) |
| Application/Subsequent Designation (First Class) | 572 | 503 |
| Each Additional Class | 119 | 105 |
| Renewal (First Class) | 794 | 699 |
| Each Additional Renewal Class | 159 | 140 |
Fee adjustments for Zambia
In contrast to the reductions seen in Kenya and OAPI, the individual fees for Zambia will see an upward revision.
| Item | Fee until 11 April, 2026 (CHF) | New Fee as from 12 April, 2026 (CHF) |
| Application/Subsequent Designation (First Class) | 49 | 58 |
| Each Additional Class | 39 | 47 |
| Renewal (First Class) | 162 | 194 |
| Each Additional Renewal Class | 130 | 155 |
Applicability of the new fees
The revised amounts for these jurisdictions will be mandatory in the following scenarios:
- International Applications: If received by the Office of origin on or after 12 April, 2026.
- Subsequent Designations: If received by the Office of the Contracting Party or filed directly with the International Bureau of WIPO on or after the effective date.
