Licensing of Civilian Firearms Holders

The Firearms Licensing Board on 31st January, 2019 issued a press release notifying civilian Firearms Licensed Holders of the mandatory vetting for all firearm(s) certificate holders in possession of such firearms licenses and permits.

The exercise shall be conducted in Nairobi region from Monday 4th February, 2019 to 7th March, 2019 at the Police Pavilion, South C from 9.00 am. Vetting dates for other regions shall be communicated through print and electronic media.

The holders will be required to carry all firearms and ammunition as well as supporting documents for all licensing acquired.

Upon verification, they will be expected to proceed to Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters for firearms ballistic analysis.

Smart cards will be then issued ten (10) working days after vetting of an individual.

The fee for the ballistics analysis test shall be Kenya Shilling Two Thousand (K.sh 2,000.00) while the new smart card will cost Kenya Shilling Five Thousand (K.sh 5,000.00).

Members of the disciplined forces and senior government officials in the security sector will be exempted from the vetting apart from obtaining a unique identifier number and having ballistic analysis done.

The vetting is pursuant to the Firearms Act (Chapter 114 Laws of Kenya) which gives the Board the mandate of certifying suitability of firearm holders. It is aimed at curbing threats to national security such as carjackings and cattle rustling that have been aided by the huge number of unlicensed firearms in the hands of civilians.
