The National Land Use Policy (“the Policy”), also referred to as Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2017 was launched by the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya on the 12th June, 2018.
The Policy seeks to set out long term goals for land use management in Kenya after years in which land use was governed by various laws and policy frameworks, where the lack of institutional coordination challenged the overall management of land use in the country.
The Policy is meant to provide a legal, administrative, institutional and technological framework for optimal utilization of land related resources in a sustainable manner.
It addresses challenges such as: sound land use practices; depletion of land cover; conservation and enhancement of the use of land, mapping out of the number and location of informal settlements and security of tenure.
The Policy also proposes to have allocation of land and issuance of titles done on the basis of approved physical development and survey plans.
The implementation and coordination will be spearheaded by the newly established National Council for Land Use Policy chaired by the Head of Public Service.
All land and land related laws are expected to be harmonized with the recommendations of the Policy.
The Policy is available here.
