In a press release dated 11th February, 2019; the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, Justice David Maraga announced the reshuffle of fourteen (14) Justices of the Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal of Kenya currently has nineteen (19) Justices who serve in four stations: Nairobi; Kisumu; Malindi and Nyeri.
The judges have been reshuffled as follows:
- Erastus M. Githinji, Hanna Okwengu and Jamila Mohammed moved from Kisumu to Nairobi;
- Fatuma Sichale and Sankale Ole Kantai moved from Nyeri to Nairobi;
- Wanjiru Karanja and Martha Koome shifted from Nairobi to Nyeri;
- Roselyn Nambuye and Daniel Musinge transferred from Nairobi to Nyeri;
- Gatembu Kairu and Agnes Murgor moved from Nairobi to Malindi; and
- Asike Makhandia, Patrick Kiage and Otieno Odek transferred from Kisumu to Nairobi.
The transfers are in line with the Court of Appeal Transfer Policy in which appellate judges are required to serve in one station for a period of two (2) years only.
The transfers take effect as from 8th April, 2019.
The reshuffle comes barely a week after a similar one in the High Court involving five (5) judges as follows:
- Chacha Mwita -moved to Kajiado High Court from Milimani Law Courts where he was head of the Constitutional & Human Rights Division;
- Weldon Korir -transferred to the Constitutional &Human Rights Division at Milimani from Malindi High Court;
- Wilfrida Okwany -moved to the Commercial & Tax Division at Milimani Law Courts from the Constitutional and Human Rights Division at the Eldoret High Court;
- Aaron Makau -moved from the Commercial & Tax Division to the Constitutional & Human Rights Division at Milimani Law Courts; and
- Reuben Nyakundi – transferred to head Malindi High Court from Kajiado High Court where he was presiding.
