EGYPT DOUBLES PATENT EXAMINATION FEES AND SHORTENS PAYMENT DEADLINES

Egypt doubles patent examination fees

The Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA) has announced amendments to the patent examination process under Decree No. 26 of 2025, published in the Official Gazette No. 132 dated 17 June 2025.

Effective 18 June 2025, the following changes apply:

  1. Increased examination fees
The official fee for patent examination has doubled, rising from EGP 25,000 to EGP 50,000(approximately USD 1,060). This marks a substantial increase that may impact the budgeting and filing strategies of applicants seeking patent protection in Egypt.
  2. Revised payment deadlines
The timeframe for payment of examination fees has been reduced from six months to three months. Under Article 3 of the Decree, applicants must now settle the required fees within three months from the date of notification, instead of the previous six-month period counted from the date of filing.

Implications for applicants
These changes emphasize the importance of early budgeting and timely action in the Egyptian patent process. Applicants are advised to closely monitor examination notifications and ensure swift payment to avoid delays or potential lapses in their applications.

We continue to monitor developments and remain available to assist with navigating the updated procedures.
