Following the entry into force of the Burundi IP Law on 28^th July 2009, all marks registered
before the enactment of the law were set to be renewed by 28^th July 2019. The law further
provided a grace period for late renewal which lapsed on 28^th January 2020. As some
proprietors were not able to renew their trademarks within the set timelines, the Burundi
Industrial Property Office has now issued a notice setting a new deadline for the renewal of
trademarks registered prior to 28^th July, 2009.

In the Notice dated 27^th February, 2023, the Office has extended the deadline for the renewal of
all trademarks which were registered prior to 28^th July, 2009 to 1^st January 2025 after which a
grace period of six (6) months shall be granted upon payment of late renewal fees.

The Notice is a relief to trademark proprietors who have not been able to undertake the renewal
of their trademarks within the earlier deadline.
