Following the entry into force of the Burundi IP Law on 28th July 2009, all marks registered
before the enactment of the law were set to be renewed by 28th July 2019. The law further
provided a grace period for late renewal which lapsed on 28th January 2020. As some
proprietors were not able to renew their trademarks within the set timelines, the Burundi
Industrial Property Office has now issued a notice setting a new deadline for the renewal of
trademarks registered prior to 28th July, 2009.
In the Notice dated 27th February, 2023, the Office has extended the deadline for the renewal of
all trademarks which were registered prior to 28th July, 2009 to 1st January 2025 after which a
grace period of six (6) months shall be granted upon payment of late renewal fees.
The Notice is a relief to trademark proprietors who have not been able to undertake the renewal
of their trademarks within the earlier deadline.
